A catastrophic gunshot wound changed Derek Pfaff's life. Ten years later, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, his life changed again when he received the gift of a new face.

ROCHESTER, Minn. – A face transplant performed at the Mayo Clinic has enabled a Michigan man to blink, swallow, smile and breathe through his nose for the first time in a decade. On March 5, 2014, Derek Pfaff’s face was severely damaged by a gunshot.

A nearly 60-hour-long surgery that began in February and involved more than 80 health care professionals, Mayo Clinic officials said.

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) - It's been a journey ten years in the making. Now just nine months post-transplant 30-year-old Derek Pfaff is sharing his experience of having a life-changing surgery. "I feel great," said face transplant recipient Derek Pfaff. "I look good, I'm happy with the outcome and the surgery was a success."

The Mayo Clinic says surgeons there successfully performed a face transplant for a Michigan man who was severely injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound 10 years ago.
