Walmart said U.S. sales rose during the most recent quarter, propelled by shoppers buying groceries, home goods and toys—a sign that spending is off to a steady start this holiday season. The retail giant raised its sales and profit estimates for the year.

The retailer saw share gains in new shoppers across income levels mainly led by upper-income households, which make more than $100,000 in annual income, Walmart officials said during an earnings call on Tuesday. Walmart in a previous earnings call had also highlighted the rise in its higher income shoppers.

Tariffs could raise prices on clothing, toys, furniture, appliances, footwear and travel goods, particularly items where China is a major supplier.

National Retail Federation CEO Matthew Shay described across-the-board tariffs as “a tax on American families.”

Walmart is the latest company warning of price increases if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on a plan to significantly expand tariffs. “We never want to raise prices,” Walmart CFO John David Rainey told CNBC on Tuesday.
