Mayor Adams, who has said that Monday’s fatal stabbing spree was a failure of government, said Tuesday he wants to expand involuntary hospitalization policies to make it easier for cops and outreach workers to get mentally ill people off the streets.

A New York Police officer and an innocent bystander were both shot after a suspect who is on lifetime parole allegedly robbed multiple stores on Tuesday.

"It is a clear example of a criminal justice system and mental health system that continues to fail New Yorkers," Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference on Monday afternoon. “There's some real questions that we need to look at on why he was on the street and he has some severe mental health issues that should have been examined.”

The investigations surrounding the Adams’ administration first became known in November 2023, when federal agents searched the home of Brianna Suggs, his chief fundraiser. The New York Times reported that the probe was tied to the mayor’s campaign connections with Turkey. The FBI also seized Adams’ phone and tablet.
