Around 11 p.m., people were exiting a venue in the River North neighborhood and standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle pulled up and someone in the car opened fire on the crowd, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference.

Police say the suspect who was killed was identified as 16 years old. The officer was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand.

Gunfire from a passing car ripped into a crowd of partygoers in the River North neighborhood, the police said.
